Dynamic Duo

In the NFL, the level of success that the LA Rams have enjoyed so far has typically come about with an organizational chart with a strong head coach overseeing both what happens on the field, as well as managing the roster in the off-season. While it can be effective in the short term, it ultimately results in either a complete burnout on the part of the head coach, or the gradual depletion of the roster.

Of course, the New England Patriots have gone against the grain, as head coach Bill Belichick has so much authority over the team’s roster that he is considered their GM as well. So that is one way to build a winner, right? Who can argue over the success of the Patriots over the past 20 years or so?

But Belichick was also a bit fortunate, as he landed rookie quarterback Tom Brady, whose NFL career has been well documented. And after parting ways with the Patriots, Brady won Super Bowl LV with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers the very next year. So far, Belichick has yet to reclaim the same level of success without Brady as he had enjoyed with Brady.

While McVay had not had blazing success with a young rookie quarterback, he is making up ground with veteran quarterback Matthew Stafford. In just their first season together, the LA Rams limped into the playoffs and proceeded to go on a 4-0 run straight through to win Super Bowl LVI.

Meanwhile, despite their success, few if any NFL analysts are talking about the LA Rams in the context of winning back-to-back Super Bowls. A daunting task? Of course, it is. But no more challenging than winning their first Super Bowl with a veteran quarterback whose only playoff experience had resulted in an 0-3 record.

So what’s all this about extending both Les Snead and Sean McVay?
