Home is where the heart is. After all the boisterous talk of holding out and tough talk, the negotiations between the Los Angeles Rams and quarterback Matthew Stafford have successfully concluded, and the results are what all Rams fans have wanted to hear. Matthew Stafford will no longer be available via a trade.
It's the answers to the hopes and fears of all Rams fans worldwide. The team has been building something special of late, and the architectural plans have been focused upon making Matthew Stafford the most comfortable at running this offense. Not all quarterbacks are able to handle all of the bells and whistles. Former QB Jared Goff was very good, but he was unable to proactively know where to go with the football when the pressure was on.
Stafford lives for those moments. When the game is on the line, with the biggest stage and the brightest spotlights, Matthew Stafford becomes even more dangerous. His best work last season were the two games in the 2025 NFL Playoffs. While the Rams lost in the Divisional Round, they pushed the Philadelphia Eagles harder than any other team.
But is there more in Stafford's gas can?
Stafford is at the point of his NFL career to win now. And, as it turns out, the LA Rams are the team that is best positioned to win now with Matthew Stafford under center.
LA’s quarterback is back: the Rams and Matthew Stafford reached agreement today on a restructured deal that keeps him in Los Angeles and quashes any and all trade speculation, per sources.

Matthew Stafford is the market setter. He is the biggest domino that was slated to fall in 2025. And now, he has chosen to return to the team that he shared a Super Bowl victory. There is no denying that HC Sean McVay and QB Matthew Stafford make the ideal offensive alignment. McVay is the strategist, the guy who tries to anticipate how a defense might react to all looks, formations, and routes. But Matthew Stafford is the quarterback who recognizes the defense, and throws the counter punches.
Wasn't this what everyone expected?
As much as the team and quarterback made sense to find common ground, there were many factors involved in this matter. Matthew Stafford is a throwback warrior on the football field. He puts everything on the line for the win. And that had left many with the impression that Stafford would never leave.
But this time, Matthew Stafford opting to go elsewhere was closer than some may like. Still, he's back. Wasn't this what many have been saying all along? I don't think that it's that simple.
More Rams offseason news:
Let's say that this fulfills all the hopes and prayers of Rams fans around the world. The Rams have been quietly rebuilding a playoff contender since falling to 5-12 in 2022. The team shocked everyone by making the playoffs in 2023, despite no Round 1 pick and almost no available salary cap space to spend in free agency.
Perhaps the team was even more surprising in 2024, restocking the defense with young eager defenders to take up the reins after All-Pro Aaron Donald retired.
Will the team have more surprises in store in 2025? After all, Stafford is back but the team appears to be committed to parting ways with WR Cooper Kupp. Still, one of Matthew Stafford's super powers throughout his NFL career has been elevating the production of his wide receivers. Among the NFL's All-Time Single Season Receiver record holders, Calvin Johnson (no. 1) and Cooper Kupp (no. 2) share one thing in common. Matthew Stafford was throwing the football to them.
So too when Rams rookie WR Puka Nacua set the NFL All-Time Single Season Rookie Receiving records in 2023, his quarterback was none other than Matthew Stafford.
While the Rams had Matthew Stafford under contract through 2026, the truth is that his contract was structured to be front loaded. That is, the team put a lot of cash in Stafford's pockets in 2022 in the form of a signing bonus. But as is often that case, that money has since been invested in expenses, real estate, and investments. Out of sight means out of mind. The Rams current compensation of $27 million schedule for 2025 was too low for Stafford's comfort.
And so, the uncomfortable conversation of more money began between the Rams and Stafford. While all fans held their collective breath, nobody really knew where it might end up.
Stafford's best chance of another Super Bowl victory is with the Rams
Every Rams fan wanted the team to reach an agreement with Matthew Stafford. Now the question is, what did this agreement cost? After all, the Rams are a good team, but even their best games in 2024 still showed signs of vulnerabilities. Some of those soft spots came simply from the fact that the team was very young. Other miscues came as a result of a shifting Rams roster that had to react to a steady diet of injuries.
Still, the guy who knows how to flip the switch from field general to fighter pilot is back. If the Rams can improve the offense's ability to score points, the defense appears poised to be in Super Bowl form. Yes, Eagles RB Saquon Barkley ran roughshod over the Rams. But I suspect that the team is already scheming to put up a better run defense in 2025. Some of that may come via an upgrade at inside linebacker via the 2025 NFL Draft.
But how can this team put more points on the board?
Many of the teams that did not have elite running backs named Derrick Henry or Saquon Barkley found great success by running the football through two running backs. While the Rams certainly had the personnel to do so in 2024, they failed to actively engage rookie running back Blake Corum last season.
Getting Corum more involved in the offense will help. Getting rookie wide receiver Jordan Whittington will help even more. Because the Rams were fighting through so many injuries last season, the timetable of developing young offensive weapons was derailed rather quickly. The team was forced to put veterans in to handle the elevated roles they would face with so many band-aids throughout the starters.
Even still, the Rams were oh so close to victory. Now, the Rams hope to get over the hump with Stafford back and a new season to improve.
Why the Rams are still on the hook for drastic changes in 2025
While persuading Matthew Stafford to return to the Rams for 2025 and 2026, let's not lose sight of how the offense performed in recent years. The Rams offense was very expensive last season, but the amount of money invested into the unit simply did not yield the kind of results that the front office had hoped to accomplish. With a new offseason, the team will attempt to navigate the perilous path of getting cheaper on offense while simultaneously becoming more productive.
There are holes in the team positional strength. There are thin areas in the Rams roster. And with the projected exodus of four wide receivers, the team is almost certainly aiming for new offensive weapons in 2025. But how readily will those weapons come online, particularly in an offense that is no longer looking at Stafford's favorite target, Cooper Kupp?
The Rams offense needs new weapons, yes. But the return of veteran TE Tyler Higbee showcased just how quickly the right player can help this offense. Higbee only played a few games last season, but let all tight ends in scoring. The 2025 NFL Draft is loaded with very talented tight ends, and fortunately the Rams have been meeting with many of them.
While the Rams may be down at the wide receiver position, look for Puka Nacua to have an incredible 2025 season. And I look for Jordan Whittington to shine with a steady dose of targets as well. After all, Matthew Stafford is back, and he is going to throw the football to someone:
Matthew Stafford is here to stay.

But all of this does not make his return to the Rams anything close to the biggest story of 2025. So, what does?
It was clear from the earnest pursuit from so many NFL teams that there is a huge deficit in elite quarterback play anticipated for 2025. With the Las Vegas Raiders, New York Giants, Indianapolis Colts, Minnesota Vikings, Pittsburgh Steelers, and Cleveland Browns all linked to the pursuit of Matthew Stafford via trade, they are all scrambling to come up with a viable Plan B for their quarterback needs. With the Los Angeles Rams included in the mix, that is over 20 percent of NFL teams impacted by the news today.
The LA Rams and Matthew Stafford have reunited for the 2025 and 2025 NFL seasons. Now, the pressure is on the Rams front office to make it worth the effort to lure him back to the flock.
In my opinion, perhaps the biggest story is not just that getting Stafford satisfied ensures that he will be their starting quarterback. The team can focus on extending other key players.
As always, thanks for reading.
