Donnie Avery Still Missing From St. Louis Rams Training Camp

As the St. Louis Rams arrived in Mequon, Wisconsin to start training camp one thing was missing, Donnie Avery. Avery the St. Louis Rams second-round draft pick, and number 33 overall pick in the 2008 NFL draft has yet to sign a contract. This is a terrible move on Avery’s part. How stupid can you be not to show up to Rams camp? You have an unbelievable opportunity to do what you have wanted to do, which is to play in the NFL. The job will basically be handed to him; all he has to do is show up. The Rams are super thin at WR, and Avery is already third on the depth chart without a doubt. Only “Big Game” Torry Holt and Drew Bennett will be in front of Avery. With the Rams picking Avery with the 33rd overall pick you know that Avery already has a spot on the roster. He needs to get in here and learn a real offense under Al Saunders and make a good impression with the veterans. Nobody owes him anything. Get in here and do the job! Last year Ted Ginn Jr. was picked 9th overall and signed a 5 year 13 million dollar contract with the Miami Dolphins. In addition Anthony Gonzalez was selected with the last pick of the first round last year by the Indianapolis Colts and received a 5 year 10.3 million dollar contract. This year Kenny Phillips was selected with the final pick of the first round by the New York Giants and he just received a 5 year 11.15 million dollar contract. So I think it is pretty clear that we know the going rate for Avery being selected should be around 5 years 10-11 million dollars. He is probably saying that he was the top WR taken in the draft and comparing that to Calvin Johnson who signed a 6 year, 27 million dollar contract last year with the Detroit Lions, but let’s be real Avery needs to take second round money and get in camp and learn this offense. The Rams need to keep a leash on these players and not let everyone think they own the place. Avery has zero catches in the NFL and it is going to stay that way for a while if he does not sign on the dotted line soon.
