St. Louis Rams Select Keith Null

With the 196th overall pick in the 2009 NFL Draft. The St. Louis Rams have selected Keith Null QB, out of West Texas A&M. At 6’3″ and 220 pounds Null is a solid drop back pocket passer. As a Junior Keith Null set school records with 4,134 passing yards and 41 touchdowns through the air in 2007. For a team with plenty of holes this is another player that at best will be a game day scratch or on the scout team in 2009. The Rams need players now, I am not a fan of this selection. With Curtis Painter and Mike Reilly still on the board among others this seems like another reach by the Rams. ESPN had Null listed as the 37th ranked QB in the draft.

Rashad Jennings is still available. I am still waiting…

From CDSDraft:

Keith has been a very fine QB for one of DII’s top programs for the past couple of years. He capped a fine collegiate career by being declared the MVP of the 2009 Cactus Bowl which pits the best DII players in the country against one another.

From FantasyFootballJungle:

Keith Null possesses the measurables of a drop-back passer. He shows improvement in working through receiver progressions and decision making. He does possess touch when throwing the eight and nine routes.

From SI:

Super-productive quarterback who lacks the arm strength to play at the next level. Sells ball fakes, looks off the safety, and knows where his receivers are on the on the field. Effectively leads the offense, shows great patience as well as poise in the pocket, and waits for receivers to come free. Throws with a fluid delivery and accurate in the short and intermediate field.

So you think that you would have rather had Reilly? Were you at the WT-CW game? Did you see WT’s marginal defense keep him at bay? Don’t count Keith out yet…

This was the pick analysis on Null’s player profile from

“Null is a tall quarterback with a live arm. He’s got very good accuracy and has good speed for his size. He was very productive in college. He’ll probably start out as the third-stringer in St. Louis.”

No I did not see or want Reilly. I believe if Jaworski thinks he can play in the NFL then he is better than Null. I am not a fan of just throwing away 5th, 6th, 7th round picks. The Rams did not need to draft a QB. Another waste pick, one of many today. We need to pick up another 3 starters today and I believe we picked up zero.

Why waste a pick on a guy who we could have signed as FA. He did have a great career at a D2 school. Almost a 70% completion %. They must have thrown and thrown and thrown the ball at WTAM, and Ryan Leaf was his QB coach. Do you think Leaf was chirping in someone’s ear about this kid? But how many of those D2 guys ever become starters in the NFL?
It will be a great story if he does make the team and if he ever starts a game. I’m pullin’ for him.

I WAS at the WT-CWU game. It always mystified me why Keith was not more highly thought of, as I saw him play against a lot of “pro hopefuls” and he always had a better game. There is nothing wrong with his arm strength, he consistently hit long passes throughout the season. Evidently the Ram scouts have something on the ball. I think he is going to do very well in the NFL.

  • Stlvinnie

It is a shame we are even talking about a QB. If they wanted a QB they could have had Sanchez. This kid will not play in front of Bulger or Boller and the bigger issue with the pick is they could have picked him up today without using a draft pick. This team needs to fill in and upgrade a solid 53 not keep wasting picks.

Do not ever underestimate the underdog! Lets just sit back and let Keith Null show us what he can do. He may not have come from a big school, but I believe he has big talent.

  • Stlvinnie

Nice of West Texas A&M to check in with us. I am sure he has talent. Chase Daniel has talent but that does not mean the Rams have a need for either. With Mike Mickens, Rashad Jennings, and a ton of Offensive Guards out there the Rams should have attempt to select a player that could at least provide backup ability in 2009. That is all I am trying to say.

  • Stlvinnie

BTW Mickens is almost the same size with long arms as well. The combination got Bradley Fletcher to the Rams in the 3rd round. Mickens could be just as good or better and we could have gotten him in the 7th round, or in the 6th instead of Null. We need to fill needs not dreams.

I have a good feeling that Keith Null will excell in the NFL, he may not be a super big name, but he does have drive, ability and ambition. He will do very well.
