Rams Trade Will Witherspoon. WHA?!?

As the trade deadline neared, the Rams traded their solid linebacker Will Witherspoon to the Philadelphia Eagles for rookie WR Brandon Gibson and an undisclosed draft pick.  Although I understand the Rams need help at the wide receiver position, I am struggling to understand why they would trade away one of their more solid defensive players for a rookie receiver that is yet to play a down.

When I saw the update “Rams trade Witherspoon.”  I thought we would possibly have received a somewhat established receiver, but I guess when you are a team that understands it won’t be making the playoffs this year, getting even younger isn’t as crazy as it sounds.

Lets get some feedback on this trade, do you feel it was a huge mistake?

Initially my reaction was much like yours; however, upon further review, I am warming up to this trade the more I delve into it. Namely, Gibson had a monster junior year and would have been at least a 3rd pick had he come out. Plus, factor in that he was very impressive in Philly’s trainig camp and this deal has value written all over it. Plus, consider that ‘Spoon hadn’t really done much this year and he’s slated to a pull about $4-5 million in salary next year, and the case could be made that he was going to be cut this offseason anyway.

At any rate, those are my thoughts as of today.

This trade, to me, shows that this team just does not care what is going on. Witherspoon WAS, unfortunately, one of the strongest players we had on the team. For a defense that, though improved, can not stop the opposing team, trading away a player that is good makes no sense to me. Damn the money issues, he was invaluable and will sorely be missed. We need receivers, I agree, but not at the expense of losing one of the best players we have. The defense is already hurting, and we get rid of a healthy player for what? If it’s less than a 2nd round pick, I swear I am revoking my fan status. Tye Hill, stupid move and Witherspoon is along the same lines in my opinion.

First Bruce, Holt and Pace. Now Witherspoon for a rookie WR picked in the 6th round of this years draft along with a future 5th round pick. The Rams are jettisoning salary for the impending sale of the team and the Spagster and Devaney aren’t close to turning anything around….or showing much of an effort!
