2014 Projections: St. Louis Rams 53-Man Roster Predictions

facebooktwitterreddit

With training camp winding down,  head coach Jeff Fisher and the St. Louis Rams will have to begin the most difficult part of camp, making roster cuts. On August 26th, teams will cut the roster down to 75 players before making the final cuts on August 28th. Here is our 53-man projected roster predictions.

Quarterbacks

1. Sam Bradford

2. Shaun Hill

3. Garrett Gilbert

I could see the Rams keeping only two quarterbacks, but at the end of the day, they did just draft Gilbert most likely to be their backup quarterback of the future, and that certainly isn’t going to be Hill at age 34.

Running Backs

1. Zac Stacy

2. Benny Cunningham

3. Tre Mason

4. Chase Reynolds

The top three guys have been set since the beginning of camp, but until last week Chase Reynolds and Isaiah Pead looked to be in for quite the competition for the fourth running back spot. With Pead now out with a torn ACL, Reynolds has that spot locked up.

Wide Receiver

1. Kenny Britt

2. Brian Quick

3. Tavon Austin

4. Chris Givens

5. Austin Pettis

*6. Stedman Bailey

These five guys shouldn’t come as much of a surprise, however, I could see the Rams keeping a sixth until Stedman Bailey gets back, but I think they will use that spot for some depth at a different position.

Tight Ends

1. Jared Cook

2. Lance Kendricks

3. Corey Harkey

4. Alex Bayer

Once again, the top three shouldn’t come as much of a surprise, and Alex Bayer has been quite impressive catching the football throughout the preseason racking up 82 yards receiving, the 6th most among tight ends in the preseason.

Offensive Line

1. Greg Robinson

2. Jake Long

3. Rodger Saffold

4. Scott Wells

5. Joe Barksdale

6. Davin Joseph

7. Mike Person

8. Tim Barnes

9. Travis Bond

This is where things start to get complicated as you’re just not quite sure who the Rams will keep or if they’ll pick up somebody else that another team cut. These nine guys are the Rams’ best offensive lineman, but once again, the Rams don’t have a lot of good depth at the position, which is why they might end up picking up somebody who gets cut from another team.

Defensive Line

1. Robert Quinn

2. Michael Brockers

3. Aaron Donald

4. Chris Long

5. William Hayes

6. Kendall Langford

7. Alex Carrington

8. Eugene Sims

9. Ethan Westbrooks

Unfortunately for Michael Sam, Ethan Westbrooks has turned out to be the best 4-3 defensive end in the preseason according to Pro Football Focus. I don’t see the Rams keeping 10 defensive lineman at this point and therefore don’t see Sam making the roster. Whoever picks up Sam after he gets cut however, is going to get one heck of a football player. Unfortunately defensive line is just a position in which the Rams are very, very deep.

Linebackers

1. Alec Ogletree

2. James Laurinaitis

3. Jo-Lonn Dunbar

4. Ray-Ray Armstrong

5. Daren Bates

6. Phillip Steward

The top five are set in my opinion, that sixth and final spot however is up for debate and could pose quite the competition in the final two weeks . I think Lawrence Wilson could push for the final spot as he hasn’t done too bad with only 21 snaps, but at the end of the day, Steward will come out on top.

Cornerbacks

1. Janoris Jenkins

2. Trumaine Johnson

3. Lamarcus Joyner

4. E.J. Gaines

5. Greg Reid

6. Brandon McGee

The Rams actually have some depth at cornerback which makes this position very difficult to project. The big question will be whether or not the Rams keep five cornerbacks or five safeties. If the Rams keep only five cornerbacks, things could get really interesting. Because the Rams have some good players behind their top guys at cornerback, I think they’ll keep six, especially with Joyner’s versatility.

Safeties

1. T.J. McDonald

2. Rodney McLeod

3. Cody Davis

4. Maurice Alexander

I have the Rams keeping only four safeties, but you have to remember Joyner could play back if needed, and he probably will in certain packages. If the Rams keep five, keep an eye on Matt Daniels.

Specialists

1. Greg Zuerlein

2. Johnny Hekker

3. Jake McQuaide

No surprise here, although I haven’t been too impressed with Zuerlein in the preseason. Hopefully he finds his stride.
