Frank Cignetti Expected To Become St. Louis Rams Offensive Coordinator

For the better part of the last month, the St. Louis Rams have been in search for a new offensive coordinator. Their search has been with little luck as they missed out on top candidates like Kyle Shanahan and Adam Gase.

It was thought by Nick Wagoner when the search first started that the Rams would go in house with somebody like Rob Boras, Ray Sherman, or Frank Cignetti, and as each out of house candidate came and went, that situation has become more and more likely.

According to NFL.com’s Ian Rapoport, the Rams are expected to promote quarterback coach Frank Cignetti to be the new offensive coordinator and an announcement will most likely come next week.

Cignetti was most successful serving as the offensive coordinator at Fresno State for four years from 2002 until 2006. His most successful season being in 2004 when Fresno State’s offense ranked fifth nationally and became the sixth team in NCAA  history to score over 50 points in four consecutive games. The 2004 team also led the WAC in average yards per carry and amassed 65 touchdowns.

While there may be minor changes in the system, the Rams will have the same type of offensive that they have been “building” in the Jeff Fisher regime. One can only hope that Cignetti has a more creative mind than Brian Schottenheimer.

In house may not be the answer that most Rams fans were looking for, but if there is a silver lining it’s that the offense is going to remain consistent and there won’t be much of a learning curve. The Rams have lacked that consistency over the past decade and it finally seems like the are establishing that.
