By waiving Aaron Murray, the Los Angeles Rams are left with Jared Goff and and Sean Mannion at quarterback on the roster.

Despite the high expectations for Jared Goff heading into his first full season as the starter for the Los Angeles Rams, the team was still expected to bring in another backup since Case Keenum, who ended up joining the Minnesota Vikings, wasn’t worth keeping around. With Sean Mannion at backup, the Rams brought Aaron Murray on board during free agency, but it looks like the former Georgia quarterback is looking for a new home once again, which has become quite the common theme already throughout his career.

Murray was waived by Los Angeles this week, as it looks like the team is leaning towards having just two quarterbacks on the roster for the 2017 season. The Rams may end up bringing another quarterback on board down the road for safety precautions, but if they weren’t even willing to give someone like Murray a chance to earn the No. 3 spot at quarterback, chances are the team is just going to stick with Goff and Mannion.

After Murray only lasted about two months with the team, it will be interesting to see moving forward if Los Angeles only having two quarterbacks on the roster ends up being what’s best for the team. Obviously, it’s easy to understand why the Rams did what they did since Murray’s roster spot could easily be used on another player at a different position, but the argument can also be made there’s even more pressure on Goff and Mannion.

Early signs indicate Sean McVay taking over at head coach will have a major improvement to the offense that only averaged 14 points per game during the 2016 season, but Goff still seems to have a way to go in the development process, even with the new additions through the draft. And if Goff were unfortunately ever to suffer some sort of injury, it’s hard not to wonder if the team would be better off with Mannion or someone different like Murray.

Fans can say what they want about Murray as a quarterback, but keep in mind he was once considered one of the nation’s top quarterbacks before a torn ACL forced his draft stock to take a major hit in 2014. It only seems like a matter of time before Murray ends up in a new home, but hopefully Goff continues to make enough progress over the next few months so Rams fans won’t care as much about the new team he ends up on.
