Boller. Bulger. Bradford?
By Ethan Novak
As we all know by now, the Rams fell to the Green Bay Packers in ugly fashion 36-17. If any positives came out of the game however, its that if the Rams have a quarterback playing at least average, this offense has a chance of moving the ball. After Marc Bulger went down with an injury, Kyle Boller stepped in and led the Rams to two touchdowns and had the fans believing that a comeback may be in the works.
So this raises an interesting question. Who is going to be the quarterback that will lead this Rams’ rebuilding process? There are three routes you can go, lets break them down:
Marc Bulger: The man under center for the Rams the last few years, Bulger just can not stay healthy or consistent any more. I’m not saying his career is over, but it definitely isn’t helping that he is playing behind a line that is allowing him to get hit on virtually every other play. He has no confidence in dropping back and he is not being the leader the Rams need right now. I will forever stand beside Bulger (he is currently my favorite player in the NFL), but just like every NFL fan, I want to start seeing some wins. With 3 years remaining on his huge contract, it appears he is either headed towards a release, or a restructure of his contract.
Kyle Boller/Keith Null: Boller struggled mightily as a quarterback in Baltimore, but that was due to high expectations, poor receivers, and the talks of his removal as quarterback. Here in St. Louis, Boller will not be expected to be a savior, he will have plenty of offensive targets, and no one will be calling for his head because everyone else is too busy calling for Bulger’s head. Boller appears to be the temporary solution at quarterback until the Rams find their quarterback of the future, most likely through the draft. Null is nowhere near ready to be a starting quarterback, but if the Rams decide he is the quarterback of the future, they need to start grooming him immediatelly. Hopefully he turns out to be more than a Ryan Fitzpatrick (Admit it, we all crowned him god after he brought the Rams back against the Texans), but it is iffy.
Sam Bradford/Colt McCoy/Tim Tebow/Jevan Snead: I would completely fine with any of these four quarterbacks being crowned our quarterback of the future. Bradford, McCoy, and Snead all have tremendous gifts in terms of throwing power, accuracy, and overall leadership. I don’t believe Tebow possesses an NFL arm, but his incredible leadership alone would have a significant impact on the team. Besides, he is the ultimate game manager and does not make mistakes. Any of these four quarterbacks would be an option if the Rams are willing to spend their first round pick on a quarterback.
