OTA News and Notes
By Justin Stine
The first day of OTAs is officially in the books, and there were plenty of noteworthy things that came out of today’s workout, the biggest having to do with the quarterback position. AJ Feeley took all of the first team snaps today, and while I can’t say I’m shocked, I thought maybe Sam Bradford would get a chance to work with the first team receivers. I know it’s early and Sam is still getting his feet wet, but I would have liked to see him make at least a few throws with the starters. It is obvious at this point that the Rams are going to use Feeley as a mentor to Bradford, and if that means Sam watches while Feeley plays early on, I’m fine with that, especially until Bradford signs a deal.
Steven Jackson was in attendance today, but obviously he didn’t participate as he recovers from back surgery. Jackson sounded confident that he would be ready for training camp, and Coach Spags even said he would like to get Steven back for the last round of OTAs later this summer. It wouldn’t bother me if Jackson sat out until camp, but if he is ready to go during OTAs, I say let him take a few handoffs to get back in the swing of things. The team won’t rush him back, so I’m fairly confident that he won’t take the field until he is 100 percent.
In injury news, OG Jacob Bell had his knee scoped today and will miss the rest of the OTAs. The recovery time is expected to be 4-to-6 weeks, so it looks like he should be able to participate in camp if all goes well. I’m not a big Jacob Bell guy, but for what we are paying him, he needs to be out on the field. It doesn’t sound like this is a huge deal, but any knee injury is something to watch closely.
