Brian Stull is reporting that the Rams are interested in former BYU running back Harvey Unga for the upcoming supplemental draft. For those of you who don’t know the story, Unga “voluntarily withdrew” from BYU after his junior season for “engaging in premarital relations” with his girlfriend. So pretty much what happened is, the school kicked him out for having sex with his girlfriend of three years who he intends to marry. I’m not going to turn this into some kind of Mormon-bashing article or religious argument, because people can believe whatever they want to believe, but kicking a college kid out of college for having sex is like kicking an offensive lineman out of a restaurant for eating. That’s just what they do.
Anyway… Here are some stats on Unga over his three-year career in college. In 2007 he rushed for 1,227 yards on 244 carries to go along with 13 touchdowns. In 2008, he went for 1,132 yards on 240 carries an 11 TDs, and in 2009 he went for 1,087 on 208 carries and 11 scores. He also added nine receiving touchdowns during his career. So to sum up, them man rushed for over 1,000 yards every season and averaged no less than 4.7 yards per carry during his time at the school. As you can see from the video above, the man runs hard and he can make people miss or run right through them. Maybe they should have just let this guy get laid to have him for another year.
It looks like almost half of the NFL will be there with the Rams on July 8 for Unga’s pro day, but he is certainly someone St. Louis needs to take a good, hard look at. He doesn’t look like a featured back in the NFL, but he might be worth a 5th-6th round supplemental pick for the Rams, which is where he is being projected. I’ll keep an eye on the situation, so stay tuned.
