One of the worst parts about the start of the regular season is this weekend, watching 32 NFL team release upwards of 1,500+ players on way to finalizing a 53-man roster for the start of Week 1. There have been a handful of surprises and “big name” cuts around the league, but for the St. Louis Rams most of the releases were expected.

Earlier in the week, the Rams announced their “first wave” of cuts, including: K/P Brett Baer, WR Demetrius Fields, WR Andrew Helmick, LS Jorgen Hus. QB Tim Jenkins, DT Al Lapuaho, LB Joseph Lebeau, TE Colby Prince, WR Raymond Radway, CB Robert Steeples, OL Graham Pocic, OL Ryan Lee, and LB Jabara Williams.

Since then, the “second wave” of cuts has trickled in, slowly throughout the weekend. As of this evening, the Rams have cut:

WR Justin Veltung

OL Sean Hooey

QB Austin Davis

TE Philip Lutzenkirchen

TE Zach Potter

WR Nick Johnson

WR Emory Blake

OL Ty Nsekhe

OL D.J. Young

DL Mason Brodine

DE R.J. Washington

DE/LB Sammy Brown

LB Josh Hull

CB Andrew Martin

CB Drew Thomas

CB Darren Woodard

S Cody Davis

S Rashard Hall

Thanks to the suspensions of Isaiah Pead and Jo-Lonn Dunbar, the St. Louis Rams were able to keep two “extra” positional players for the season opener against the Arizona Cardinals, with neither player counting towards the 53-man roster until their suspensions are completed. For RB Chase Reynolds and OG Brandon Washington, two fringe players at “stacked” positions, that is good news, for now.

However, if last year is any indication, this not be the “final roster” for the St. Louis Rams, with Jeff Fisher and Les Snead likely to be combing through the official releases for competent help at offensive tackle, tight end, and/or defensive back.

After the released today, here is the “unofficial” depth chart for the St. Louis Rams headed into the season opener:
