If you didn’t read our Tuesday Morning Links you didn’t see that fansided.com released their latest 2014 mock draft. If the draft were to start this week the Rams would be selecting at number three (Washington’s pick) and their own pick at number 15. Here’s who writer Josh Sanchez had the Rams taking:
“With the 3rd pick in the 2014 NFL Draft, The St. Louis Rams select….Jake Matthews, offensive tackle, Texas A&M.”
"The St. Louis Rams are showing signs of life after loading up their roster with talented offensive weapons, but they will need to protect their quarterback to make sure he has the necessary time to deliver them the ball.Sam Bradford was showing signs of improvement before suffering a torn ACL to end his season, so the Rams will need to do everything in their power to keep him healthy next season if they want to take the next step. One way to do that would be adding the top offensive tackle in this year’s draft — Jake Matthews."
Jake Matthews is the best player available right here, him or OLB Anthony Barr. I don’t think this pick makes much sense other than the fact that Fisher coached Jake’s dad Bruce in Houston/Tennessee.
Fisher doesn’t have a record of taking offensive lineman in the first round as you can find a starting offensive lineman in the second or third. The only way I could see this happening is if Rodger Saffold doesn’t resign with the team, but even then I think the Rams would wait until the second or third round.
In all reality however I can see the Rams trading down with a team trying to trade up ahead of a team to grab one of the top quarterbacks. The Rams probably would not get as much as they did in the RGIII deal, but they would pick up a decent amount of picks in return.
I could see the Rams trading back to get a player like defensive tackle Louis Nix III or wide receivers Sammy Watkins or Marquise Lee. Nix III would solidify the Rams defensive line as the best in the league and would cause havoc to opposing offensive lines. Lee and Watkins would give the Rams that true number one receiver that they have been looking for since Torry Holt and Isaac Bruce left.
“With the 15th pick the St. Louis Rams select…Justin Gilbert, CB, Oklahoma State.”
"The St. Louis Rams are one of the most promising young teams in the NFL and their two first-round picks will help them continue to improve. We saw that the Rams went with offensive line help with their first pick, so this time they can turn their attention towards the defensive side of the ball. While the team has an incredible front-seven, they will need to improve their secondary to really take that next step.By adding Gilbert, the team would be able to immediately form an impressive duo at cornerback with Gilbert and Janoris Jenkins. Safety is also an option, but as theSeattle Seahawks have shown, you can never have too many talented corners."
I agree with this pick and like it a lot. The Rams are having troubles all over in the secondary as proven by Michael Crabtree and Anquan Boldin last week. Right now Trumain Johnson and Janoris Jenkins rank 87th and 88th in coverage according to pro football focus and rank 72nd and 77th in overall ratings.
Gilbert would make a nice addition to the Rams secondary, being the highest rated cornerback in the draft.
I could also see the Rams taking S Ha-Ha Clinto Dix out of Alabama, either way the Rams are going to help their secondary with this pick.
The Rams are once again going to add some really good talent to an already talented roster, the only question is where they are going to add that talent. Let us know what you think about these picks and who you want the Rams to take in the comment section below.
