2014 Player Profiles: Wide Receiver
Jordan Matthews, Vanderbilt
Last season the Rams got a steal when they drafted Zac Stacy out of Vanderbilt, this year they could add yet another solid talent to their offense by drafting Matthews. Matthews brings good size, good route running, and consistency.
He gives effort blocking which is what Jeff Fisher likes and plays with a lot of intensity. He does however lack the elite speed to beat cornerbacks over the top and at times catches with his body rather than his hands.
Last season Matthews had 1, 477 yards and seven touchdowns off of 112 receptions. The year before he had 94 receptions that went for 1,323 yards and eight touchdown and in 2011 he had 778 yards receiving and five touchdowns off of 41 receptions. Matthews owns SEC records for career receptions with 262 and receiving yards with 3,759.
One reason the Rams drafted Zac Stacy was the he was consistent having rushed for over 1,000 yards his last two seasons at Vanderbilt, and Matthews has done much of the same. Given that the Rams had success with Stacy last year, they very well could go after Matthews this year.
