The St. Louis Rams completed their preseason Thursday against the Miami Dolphins by losing a heartbreaker, giving up 14 unanswered points in the fourth quarter to fall 14-13 and finish the preseason with one win and three losses.

Garrett Gilbert, the St. Louis Rams’ sixth round draft pick had one last chance to prove that he was worthy of staying on the roster as a backup quarterback. With two minutes to go Gilbert got the opportunity to lead the offense down the field to get the last second victory over the Miami Dolphins.

The final drive started well for Gilbert as he completed the first pass to Brad Smelley for 14-yards and then hit Smelley again for eight more yards. From that point on however, the drive stalled after a sack followed by a false start. On fourth and ten from his own 40-yard line, Gilbert threw incomplete to Austin Franklin, allowing the Dolphins to just run out the clock.

Unlike many anticipated, Austin Davin got the start for the Rams and had a solid performance, completing 12 of 19 passes for 162 yards and a touchdown. Unless something changes, Davis should have the backup quarterback position locked up.

Davis’ lone touchdown pass came in the second quarter on a 11-yard completion to Austin Pettis to give the Rams an early 10-0 lead.

Up 13-0 going into the fourth quarter, the Rams looked like they were in pretty good shape, however the Dolphins went on back to back touchdown drives, and just like that the Rams trailed 14-13 and would be unable to seal the victory.

The Rams will be on a long week as they prepare for their home opener against the Minnesota Vikings as well as having to cut players to get the roster down to the final 53. St. Louis will be without their starting quarterback Sam Bradford for the entirety of the season, therefore they will be relying on the arm of 34-year old quarterback Shaun Hill. Buckle up Rams fans, because the regular season is finally under way.
