With the conclusion of the 2014 season the St. Louis Rams have announced five team awards which includes their most valuable player and top rookie. The Rams also give awards to the player who best exemplifies sportsmanship, a player who goes through the most diversity, and the player who shows the most commitment to community service.
Team MVP: Robert Quinn
This is Quinn’s second consecutive season winning the team MVP award and it’s hard to disagree as Quinn got to double digit sacks for the third consecutive season. He also had the fourth most quarterback hits among 4-3 defensive ends as well as 37 quarterback pressures and 14 tackles for loss. The Rams defensive end made his second consecutive Pro Bowl and is showing that he is one of the more dominant defensive ends in the league.
Another player who certainly deserves an honorable mention is Aaron Donald who made his impact felt after he became the team’s full-time starter, but Quinn is certainly a player who deserves the MVP Award.
Rookie of the Year: Aaron Donald
Once again it is extremely hard to disagree with the Rams on this one as Donald has shown potential to be a perennial Pro Bowler and All-Pro level player. Donald led all NFL rookies with 9.0 sacks which finished second among all NFL defensive tackles.
Donald led the Rams with 17 tackles for loss and became the first Rams rookie defender since 1971 to make the Pro Bowl. Since the NFL made sacks an official statistic in 1982, only three times has a Rams defensive tackle posted more sacks than Donald’s 9.0.
Selected 13th overall, Donald will be a top contender for defensive player of the year and has arguably out-performed his draft position of 13.
Some other players who certainly deserve an honorable mention are cornerback E.J. Gaines and running back Tre Mason, but without question it has been Donald who has been the most impressive.
Walter Payton Man of the Year: Johnny Hekker
Spirit Of The Game Award: Corey Harkey
Adversity Award: Scott Wells
