Not very often here on Ramblin’ Fan do we discuss anything other than St. Louis Rams football. However, I don’t think it would be right to not remember the great SportsCenter news anchor who was Stuart Scott.
The famous ESPN anchor passed away on Sunday at the age of 49 after a long battle with cancer.
While I didnt personally know Stuart Scott, like many people in the United States, I felt like I knew him. Every day when I would watch that day’s episode of SportsCenter, there he was, Stuart Scott.
Watching Stuart Scott do Sportscenter highlights when I was a kid was one of the many reasons why I got into sports. He caught my attention with some of his famous catch phrases from “as cool as the other side of the pillow”, “just call him butter cuz he’s on a roll”, or “and The Lord said you’ve got to RISE UP!” He was my favorite ESPN anchor, and there is no doubt he will be missed.
“When you die, it does not mean that you lose to cancer. You beat cancer by how you live, why you live, and in the manner in which you live.”-Stuart Scott
Going into sports journalism and sports broadcasting, Stuart Scott has always been somebody that I have looked up to, somebody that was the face of the channel that I loved to watch. He has truly been an inspiration.
Even though his role of ESPN changed due to obvious circumstances, and he spent less and less time on the air, there is no doubt SportsCenter will not be same without him.
Like the rest of the Sports World on Sunday morning, I was heartbroken to hear the news of his passing. Scott found a way to build a unique connection with his audience, myself included.
He will be somebody who will not only be remembered for changing the sports broadcasting industry, but also as someone who was brave and who has been an inspiration for so many.
Stuart Scott was truly cooler than the other side of the pillow. Rest in Peace…
