After many fans never thought it would happen, the St. Louis Rams are currently searching for a new offensive coordinator.
According to ESPN Brian Schottenheimer has been hired to be the new offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach for the University of Georgia.
Schottenheimer interviewed for the Georgia gig and was reportedly a top candidate along with Kurt Roper and Randy Sanders. Schottenheimer will take over for Mike Bobo who had served on Marc Richt’s staff at UGA since 2001.
What makes this situation interesting is that although we dont know if the Rams offered Schottenheimer more money, but it doesn’t seem like they fought very hard to keep him around.
Schottenheimer has taken a lot of criticism by Rams fans over the past three years for calling a very predictable, vanilla offense, while lacking creativity.
The Rams finished the regular season ranked 28th in total offense and 21st in scoring. The offense also let down the defense after strong performances against the Arizona Cardinals and Seattle Seahawks.
Where do the Rams go from here? In a press conference on Wednesday, Rams general manager Les Snead told the media that head coach Jeff Fisher will lead the charge to search for a new coordinator.
As of right now there are no names of possible candidates being thrown around. Snead did say that a hiring could take some time and that it Fisher will most likely be patient with a decision.
If the Rams do go in-house ESPN Rams reporter Nick Wagoner said that Rob Boras, the tight ends coach would be a name to keep an eye on. However, Frank Cignetti, the Rams quarterback coach is also an option.
Some other names to could be former Chicago Bears head coach Marc Trestman and 49ers offensive coordinator Greg Roman. The Rams could also look at some college guys such as Baylor’s Art Briles or West Virginia’s Dana Holgorsen.
