St. Louis Rams Make Chris Weinke New Quarterbacks Coach

The St. Louis Rams have hired former NFL quarterback, Chris Weinke, as their new quarterbacks coach. A week after Rams coach Jeff Fisher interviewed Jeff Garcia for the vacant quarterbacks coach job and promoted Frank Cignetti to offensive coordinator, Fisher decided to hire Weinke for the job.

After an NFL career with the Carolina Panthers and San Francisco 49ers, Weinke has been working as a coach at the IMG Academy Florida. According to Pro Football Talk, he was beginning to carve out a niche in the quarterback guru market, having worked with Cam Newton his rookie season.

The IMG  Academy along with John Madden, offers a comprehensive football training program that emphasizes teaching the fundamental techniques of the game. Weinke has also worked with Seattle’s Russell Wilson and Minnesota’s Teddy Bridgewater.

While the former Panthers quarterback didnt have much success at the NFL level, going 1-15 and throwing 15 touchdowns to 26 interceptions, he does hold the Panthers second highest passing yards in a game with 423 yards. Newton broke the record with 432-yards in 2011.

Weinke also has some history with the Rams as he played against them once in 2001 with Carolina. The Rams won the game 38-32, but Weinke threw for 312 yards.

Weinke also won the Heisman Trophy at Florida State in college and has since had his number 16 retired. The new Rams quarterback coach will join another Heisman Trophy winner in St. Louis in hopes to help him come back from two ACL surgeries and take the offense to the next level.

At first glance this hire didnt make a lof of sense. This will be Weinke’s first job as a coach in the NFL, but given his experience at the IMG Academy, he certainly has some expertise to go along with a good resume. With what was out there, Weinke may have been the best option.
