St. Louis Rams Must Re-Sign Kenny Britt

A little less than a year ago, the St. Louis Rams signed former Tennessee Titans wide receiver Kenny Britt to a one-year “prove it” deal. To say the least, he did just that.

Britt finished 2014 with a career high 48 catches for 748 yards and three touchdowns. Not to mention he became the first Rams pass-catcher since receiver Torry Holt in 2008 to even crack 700 receiving yards in a season.

That is with Austin Davis and Shaun Hill throwing him the football. Imagine what he could do with a healthy Sam Bradford, or possible rookies Brett Hundley or even Jameis Winston.

The Rams have seen the effect of not having a number one receiver did to Sam Bradford early in his career, and it looks like they finally found one.

After years of drafting Mardy Gilyard, Greg Salas, Austin Pettis, and signing names like Laurent Robinson, Mike Sims-Walker, and Mark Clayton, the Rams have found a guy who can manage his own on the outside and make big plays.

Britt had 15.6 yards per catch, the most on the Rams and 14th in the NFL, and was the only player on the team with ten or more 20+ yard catches with 13.

Britt gave the Rams a much-needed consistent threat in the passing game.

While Britt showed a threat in the passing game, he also showed his effect as a leader. Brian Quick had a career year and finally blossomed. This is a guy that had 458 yards in his first two years combined and was doomed to be a bust. Instead he was on pace for 857 yards before getting hurt.

After the season ended, Quick expressed his fondness for Britt and the effect that having the veteran receiver had on him, even went as far as calling him a mentor.

“That’s why he’s here. Just looking at him shows that I can do the same thing.”- Brian Quick

Jeff Fisher obviously likes the receiver as he drafted him in Tennessee then brought him to St. Louis,  Britt obviously proved himself on his prove it deal, but at the end of the day, it’s going to come down to money. The NFL after all is a business.

In now way, shape, or form will the Rams be paying him like the Jeremy Maclin‘s, Torry Smith’s, or Demaryius Thomas’ of the world. Most likely Britt will require a deal similar to that of Philadelphia Eagles receiver, Riley Cooper, who is getting paid $5.5-million, but isn’t capable of doing half of what Britt can.

The Rams have plenty of other needs this offseason. Cashing in on Britt allows Les Snead to focus on drafting up front on the offensive line where the Rams struggled last season, rather than take an unnecessary wide receiver like Amari Cooper, Kevin White, or DeVante Parker.

At 26 years old, clearly Britt has a highly desirable balance of experience while still being young enough to play at a top-level and still get better. For the right price, the Rams need to bring him back.

The Rams have had problems at the wide receiver in the past, and for the first time since what seems like Torry Holt left, they finally have solid weapons on offense, and more specifically, the wide receiver position. The St. Louis Rams need to do what they can to bring back Kenny Britt.
