St. Louis Rams Take Wisconsin’s Rob Havenstein In Second Round of NFL Draft
With the 57th pick of the 2015 NFL Draft, the St. Louis Rams have selected Wisconsin’s Rob Havenstein. Originally holding the 41st overall pick, Les Snead and Jeff Fisher traded back with the Panthers at 57 exchanging second round picks and in return received the Panthers’ third round and sixth round picks.
Havenstein is 6’7, 321-lbs and was named consensus first-team All-Big Ten. He started 42 of 54 games that he played which speaks to his durability. He has excellent size for an offensive lineman and surprisingly quick feet.
Last season at Wisconsin Havenstein had zero holds called against him in 2014 and gave up a mere 2.5 sacks. At 6’7 he has ideal size and strength and has the tools to be a starting right tackle in the league.
Havenstein’s drop to the second round could be due to his combine results and unathletic build. The Wisconsin tackle was last in the bench press of any offensive linemen at the combine, was tied for sixth slowest time in the 20-yard shuttle, had the slowest three-cone drill time and was named the combine’s Biggest Workout Loser.
Also on the board for the Rams were Wisconsin’s Randy Gregory and Arizona State’s Jalen Strong. The Rams decided to pass on both players and address and big hold on the offense.
In the second round of the 2015 NFL Draft addressing the offensive line was going to have to be the number one priority after missing out on Scherff and Flowers in the first round. The Rams ended up taking Gurley, but didnt have anybody that would be able to block for him.
The Rams fixed that in the second round. They almost got into another nightmare situation when Cincinnati took Oregon’s Jake Fisher just a few picks ahead of St. Louis, but the Rams didnt panic, instead they took Wisconsin’s Havenstein.
As of right now the starting offensive line could be:
LT Robinson
LG Washington
C B. Jones
RG Saffold
RT Havenstein
It’s not perfect, but it’s better than it was. St. Louis has two picks in the third round and look for them to take yet another offensive lineman or maybe even a quarterback like Bryce Petty or Brett Hundley.
