Sean Mannion was selected by the St Louis Rams in round three, at pick number 25, in the 2015 NFL Draft.

The social media response to this draft choice was a mixed bag, with some fans asking what Les Snead and Jeff Fisher were thinking, drafting a rookie in the third round that was projected to be a fifth or sixth round pick? Others may agree with this decision, projecting Mannion as a top candidate for a future role as a starting QB in St Louis? Here is what we know about Mannion.

Mannion’s overall draft grade was 5.24, completing the 40-yard dash in 5.14 seconds, the 3-cone drill in 7.29 seconds and the vertical jump at 31.0 inches.

It’s also interesting that Mannion was selected at almost the same overall pick as starting QB Nick Foles!

The Oregon State Beavers football team finished with a record of 5-7 in the Pac-12 football division last season, with Mannion starting as QB for the past four years in Oregon. Mannion has a nice fluid passing motion, carefully locating targets across the gridiron, however, this process needs to quicken if Mannion is to survive in the NFL.

Mannion has played in a pro-style offense, and plays well under a strong offensive line, however, Mannion’s confidence can become an issue on the field, for he has demonstrated signs of high turnovers and fumbles in football games.

The current QB depth chart in St Louis has the following players:

  1. Nick Foles
  2. Case Keenum
  3. Austin Davis

“Mannions confidence can become an issue on the field, for he has demonstrated signs of high turnovers and fumbles in football games where the opposition is dominating.”

Mannion’s leadership skills are an issue, however, there are glimpses of NFL potential during his college career, but will this be enough to move up in the Rams’ QB depth chart?

Certain doubts or hopes that fans have for Mannion may find the upcoming OTA’s in St Louis set to begin next week, as a useful sign to judge the type of QB he really is.
