Defensive Tackle: Merlin Olsen (1962-1976)

Where there is Deacon Jones there is Merlin Olsen. Olsen was also part of the “Fearsome Foursome” line and is arguably the best Defensive Tackle in Rams history.

“Our whole philosophy was to intimidate the quarterback. We were able to do it. We were pioneers. People still recognize us as, maybe, the best defensive line of all time” – Merlin Olsen

Deacon and Merlin formed the NFL’s odd couple, with Deacon playing with anger and attitude and Merlin with calmness and modesty. Olsen made an NFL record 14 consecutive Pro-Bowls, started 198 consecutive games, and is credit with 94 unofficial sacks. That’s 94 sacks as a Defensive Tackle, pretty impressive. He also won the Defensive Rookie of the Year award in 1962. Reuniting Jones and Olsen is an obvious move and instantly makes this line dangerous.
