If there’s one lingering question surrounding the St. Louis Rams, it’s this. When will they make the playoffs again? After finishing the 2014 season with a 6-10 record, the Rams’ have now missed the playoffs 10 straight seasons.
Even though it’s been rough in St. Louis over these past ten seasons, there are still many things to be excited about heading into the 2015 season. Previous first overall draft selection Sam Bradford was traded to the Philadelphia Eagles, and the Rams’ picked up a solid quarterback in Nick Foles in return.
Heading into training camp, the Rams’ are solid on the defensive line. They’ve improved their linebacking corps, and will have more experience in the secondary. The defense is undoubtedly the strongest aspect of this years squad, and looks like it could be for the next decade if they can keep the pieces together.
After the NFL Draft, Sports Illustrated gave their annual prediction for each division in the league. Even with all of the offseason improvements, they weren’t too high on the Rams’ entering the season.
"“St. Louis hasn’t had a winning season since 2003, and Fisher hasn’t been north of .500 since ’08. Those are trends I foresee continuing.” – Don Banks"
Perhaps the biggest acquisition this offseason was the signing of former Lions’ DT Nick Fairley. The former Auburn DT had a couple of injury riddled seasons in Detroit, but has trimmed his weight down in 2015. He could possibly make the biggest impact for the Rams’ this season.
Fairley’s best season came in 2013 for the Lions as he registered 35 tackles, six sacks, and one forced fumble. He started 15 games that season for Detroit which is the most in any season of his young career.
With his addition, the Rams’ now have one of the best defensive lines in the NFL. It’s a line featuring Robert Quinn, Chris Long, Aaron Donald, Michael Brockers, and now Fairley. All five of these players were first round draft selections.
Many NFL analysts still don’t believe in the St. Louis Rams heading in to the 2015 season. Does anyone believe they can make the postseason this year?
Three of our friends over at FanSided’s NFLMocks.com predicted the Rams to make the postseason in 2015. Two picked them to win a wild card spot, and one as the NFC West champion!
"“This team has greatly improved this offseason, with a strong draft class and smart acquisitions this team is ready to compete with anyone in the league.” – NFL Mocks"
With the 49ers’ losing some key starters on offense and defense, along with the Arizona Cardinals not knowing the status of veteran quarterback Carson Palmer, this may be the best opportunity for the Rams’ to make a move in the division.
Even with the pending threat of relocation, this should be a fun season for football fans in St. Louis. Fans have a lot to look forward to with this team. Hopefully expectations don’t fall short again, and the Rams buck the trend and extend their season by a few games.
