St. Louis Rams lose blowout to the Chicago Bears, 37-13

The St. Louis Rams dropped to 4-5 on Sunday after a blowout loss to the Chicago Bears to the tune of 37-13. The Rams offense was no where to be found as quarterback Nick Foles completed just 17 passes for 200-yards and an interception. The Bears were also successful in slowing rookie sensation Todd Gurley. Gurley finished with just 45 rushing yards and a touchdown.

St. Louis opened the game with a rushing touchdown from Gurley, the only Rams touchdown of the game for the second straight week. However, it was all down hill form there. St. Louis struggled to gain yards and a quick flurry of scores from the Bears took the running game out of the equation before halftime even arrived.

Gurley lead all backs with 45 rushing yards and lead all receivers with 44 receiving yards. Brian Quick followed things up with 37-yards, but only hauled in one pass on seven targets. New comer Wes Welker was involved on most third down opportunities. Welker caught three passes for 32-yards on six targets. Foles was all over the place Sunday afternoon. His passes were usually long or off target and his receivers provided poor route running.

The Rams defense finally showed signs of cracking. It took 10 long weeks, but it was apparent that in today’s NFL stringing together 16 dominant performances can be extremely difficult. Chicago quarterback Jay Cutler enjoyed the afternoon to the tune of 244 passing yards and three touchdowns. With Matt Forte out with an injury, rookie Jeremy Langford was the Bears starting running back. The normally stout Rams run defense was anything but in the loss. Langford rushed for 73-yards and a touchdown, and added another 109 receiving yards and a touchdown to finish the afternoon.

Bears tight end Zach Miller scored a pair of touchdowns, his second consecutive week with at least one touchdown, opened things up for Chicago with an 87-yard touchdown grab to tie the game at seven in the first quarter. Miller hadn’t scored a touchdown in a regular season game in the previous four season prior to last week. The Rams did a good job containing Alshon Jeffery holding him to 23 receiving yards on three catches. Jeffery was covered most of the afternoon by Janoris Jenkins, but in the redzone head coach Jeff Fisher moved Trumaine Johnson over to cover Jeffery and the combination seemed to work well.

Third down efficiency continues to prove to be the Rams achilles heel. Against the Bears, St. Louis converted only four third downs on 12 opportunities. The Rams were flagged 8 times for 57-yards, including two offensive holding calls on left tackle Greg Robinson. Robinson now leads the NFL with eight offensive holding penalties. The first holding call on Robinson negated a Tavon Austin touchdown.

Two turnovers, one interception and one fumble (Tre Mason), losing the time of possession battle and accumulating only 11 first downs all contributed to the rough afternoon.

After stringing together consecutive wins, St. Louis drops two in a row to fall to third place in the NFC West. The team will travel to play the Baltimore Ravens next Sunday at 1 pm ET.
