Taking a Serious Look at 2016 NFL Draft Receivers for the St. Louis Rams
By Matt Colinco
Laquon Treadwell, Ole Miss (6’3”, 216 lbs)
The Crete, Illinois native has shot up draft boards as of late. Laquon Treadwell has always been a highly touted athlete, however. Coming out of high school, he was a five-star prospect and the number one-ranked wide receiver in the nation.
Treadwell did not disappoint during his time at Ole Miss. After compiling 82 receptions for 1,153 yards and 11 touchdowns in his junior season, Chad Kelly’s favorite target is heading off to the NFL.
Why The Rams SHOULD Pick Treadwell:
If you didn’t get the chance to watch the Allstate Sugar Bowl, Laquon Treadwell led the Rebels to an absolute rout over a decent Oklahoma State team. His three receiving touchdowns on six receptions for 71 yards that day showcased his ability to gain separation from defenders and make contested catches on a regular basis.
Scouts are absolutely salivating over this kid out of Ole Miss, and rightfully so. Treadwell has all the tools to be successful at the next level. Not only does he have good speed and prototypical size to complement his exceptional hands, but he can also block in the running game to open up lanes for Todd Gurley to run in the secondary.
If Laquon Treadwell falls to the Rams in the first round, the team needs to pull the trigger.
Why The Rams SHOULDN’T Pick Treadwell:
Treadwell needs to work on his route running if he wants to compete. It’s not the worst in the country, but it’s a common problem for big and tall wide receivers. It probably won’t be a big problem in the NFL once he finishes his first training camp, but it’s certainly something to watch in the draft process.
Pro Comparison: Allen Robinson, Jacksonville Jaguars
A lot of people are going to be comparing Treadwell to Dez Bryant of the Dallas Cowboys or Alshon Jeffery of the Chicago Bears come mock draft season, but I personally like the Allen Robinson comparison. Treadwell and Robinson have very similar size and speed, and are touchdown-grabbing machines. They both needed work on their route running at the collegiate level, but hopefully Treadwell can be as good as or better than Robinson when fully developed.
