Alshon Jeffery To The Los Angeles Rams?
This offseason will be a big one for the Los Angeles Rams. Moving into a new market, it will be key that they sign a big name free agent to help them when early. One of the biggest free agents that could hit the market this offseason is Chicago Bears wide receiver, Alshon Jeffery.
Of course every Rams fan knows about Alshon Jeffery and are bitter every time he catches a touchdown pass. Taken 12 picks earlier in the second round of the same draft was none other than Brian Quick. In his time with the Rams Quick has 64 receptions, 935 yards, and seven touchdowns. Meanwhile, Jeffery has about four times as many catches with 252 to go along with 3,728 yards and 24 touchdowns.
With the miss on Quick, the Rams have yet to have a legitimate number one receiver since Torry Holt left the team and haven’t had a 1,000 yard receiver since Holt. There was hope that it could be Quick, but that just hasn’t been the case.
This is just one of the big misses in the Les Snead and Jeff Fisher era. The Rams have had flashes from Quick, but nothing that says he is a number one receiver like Jeffery. The numbers between the two players aren’t even close.
Recently the Rams hired the Bears’ wide receiver coach, Mike Groh, for the same position as well as be their passing game coordinator. This has lead some to believe that there is a chance that the Rams could sign Jeffery this offseason.
Of course there could be a lot of competition for the top receiver, but at the very least here the Rams have a connection to Jeffery which could be a big thing when it comes to free agency. Groh is somebody that Jeffery has had success with and is very familiar with.
Starting new in Los Angeles with one of the best running backs in the league in Todd Gurley, could also make the Rams an attractive destination. In the end, the Rams at least have a connection if nothing else.
However, in the long run, it could mean nothing. Jeffery is without a doubt the top receiver for the Bears even after drafting Kevin White last year. The fact is, without having playing a snap, the Bears still have no idea what they have in White. It is very rare that a franchise caliber player hits the free agent market. The Bears would be smart to pay Jeffery and it’s most likely what will happen.
As doubtful as Jeffery coming to Los Angeles may be, as Rams fans can only do, they can have hope. As mentioned above, the Rams now have a connection to possibly one of the biggest players that could hit the free agent market, and that’s something.
