Los Angeles Rams Hire Mike Groh To Help Passing Game
The Los Angeles Rams have filled a hole on the offensive coaching staff. According to Nick Wagoner of ESPN, the Rams have hire Mike Groh to coach the receivers as well as be the passing game coordinator.
Groh spent the last three seasons in Chicago with the Bears as the receiver coach and the Rams are hoping that he can help brings aspects of the Bears’ prolific passing game to their offense. Under Groh, the Bears have had three 1,000-yard receiving seasons and as a team, Chicago’s offense has produced three of the top five highest passing marks in franchise history with 4,450 passing yards in 2013 (first), 4,035 in 2014 (third) and 3,843 last season (fourth).
“He’s a talented, young coach that has proven himself on the college level as well as in the NFL.” –Jeff Fisher on hiring Groh
Meanwhile, the Rams had the worst passing offense last season and haven’t had a 1,000 yard receiver since 2007 when Torry Holt eclipsed the mark. Since then, the Rams haven’t had a legitimate number one receiving threat.
It is uncertain what sort of role Groh will have in the passing game, but from what he did in Chicago, this might actually be a good hire. Granted, he worked with great receivers such as Alshon Jeffery and Brandon Marshall, but by working under Adam Gase, he might be able to bring some creativity to the offense.
Also, with a connection to Jeffery this offseason could be very interesting for the Rams. The Bears receiver is set to hit the free agent market, and it certainly can’t be a bad thing that the Rams have a connection to the receiver. As doubtful as Jeffery coming to the Los Angeles may be, as Rams fans can only do, we will hold out hope.
