The Los Angeles Rams currently own the 15th overall pick in the 2016 NFL draft. With Super Bowl 50 now in everyone’s rear view mirror, various observers are looking ahead to what changes may come in the offseason. While it is clearly early days, a trend is already starting to appear – an expectation that the Los Angeles Rams will use their first round pick to take a quarterback. On the NFL.com Mock Draft Central page, early opinion is clear:

Pundits Chad Reuter, Lance Zierlein and Daniel Jeremiah all have the Los Angeles Rams taking Memphis signal caller Paxton Lynch with this selection. The final selection made by Bucky Brooks still have the Rams taking a quarterback, although he has Carson Wentz falling lower than many are predicting to allow him to be taken at fifteen.

With Nick Foles, Case Keenum and Sean Mannion currently on the Los Angeles Rams roster, taking Lynch in round one has the potential to cause a dilemma. Jeff Fisher has gone on record as saying he sees Keenum as the starter going into 2016, Foles is due to remain with the team due to the contract extension he received prior to the 2015 season and Mannion is still to really show what he can do after being drafted higher than expected in round three last year. To cut or trade any of these would clearly be an acknowledgement of failure in one form or another.

That said, it is likely many fans would welcome a new young franchise quarterback. While Mannion and Garrett Gilbert before him were mid- to late round picks never looked upon as immediate starters, taking Paxton Lynch in the first round would surely mean he would be expected to start from week one. Could this be the spark needed to breathe new life into the Los Angeles Rams offense?

Unquestionably the profile of Paxton Lynch, along with every other draft prospect, has the potential to rise and fall between now and draft night. As too does the Rams position on the draft board. We have seen several trades within the first round in recent years, and if the team does have their sights set on a certain quarterback it is by no means impossible that the Rams may jump up or down a few places to get the man they want.
