Los Angeles Rams’ Benny Cunningham Visiting New England Patriots

The Los Angeles Rams have their handful of restricted free agents as well as unrestricted free agents. Two of the bigger restricted free agents on the team are running back Benny Cunningham and quarterback Case Keenum.

According to several NFL insiders, the New England Patriots brought “Bam-Bam” Cunningham into Foxborough for a visit. Cunningham was tendered at the low level by the Rams which means if the Patriots sign him to an offer sheet, and the team doesn’t match, there is no compensation awarded to the Rams.

Cunningham seems to fit the type of running back that the Patriots like when it comes to backs who can catch the ball out of the backfield and make plays that route. While with the Rams, he has 150 carries for 647 yards and  four touchdowns to go along with 77 receptions for 661 yards and another touchdown catching the ball out of the backfield.

This would be a big loss for the Rams if the Patriots do make an offer and they dont match. As seen from the numbers, Cunningham has been a solid running back on the team while also contributing on special teams as a kick returner.

The Rams also have some uncertainty in their running back depth as well as Tre Mason was recently tasered and then arrested in the Hollywood area for resisting an officer, reckless driving, failure to register a motor vehicle and possession of marijuana in an amount less than 20 grams.

This has yet to be reviewed by the NFL, but given the circumstance, he could end up being suspended making Cunningham’s presence that much more important as depth behind Gurley.

Cunningham is not a guy that is going to carry the load, but he does have his role in the Rams’ backfield. Hopefully the team can find a way to retain him.
