The Los Angeles Rams have made the move of the 2016 NFL Draft. According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, the Rams have moved up from the 15th overall pick to the number one spot originally held by the Tennessee Titans.
As Schefter says, the Rams have moved up to the number one overall pick, but will have to give up their first round pick this year, both second round picks, and a first and third round pick next year. Meanwhile, they will receive a fourth and a sixth round pick in this year’s draft.
It was only four years ago when the Rams were making blockbuster trades in the draft. In 2012 the Rams traded the 2nd overall pick to the Washington Redskins so that they could acquire RGIII. Flash forward to 2016 and this time it is the Rams moving up.
While it looks like the Rams gave up the farm to move up 14 spots to get a player they have no idea what he’s going to be, it really isn’t that much. Taking a look at the RGIII trade a few years ago in which the Redskins traded three first round picks and two second round picks, that was to move up from the sixth overall spot to the second overall spot. The Rams are moving up 14 spots and are giving up two first rounders, two second rounders, and two third rounds, but they are also getting two picks back.
Presumably with this pick the Rams are going to move up to take a quarterback. Several sources are saying that the pick will be Carson Wentz out of North Dakota State, but that Jared Goff out of California is still on the conversation.
With this trade the Rams will get their franchise guy and if it works out, any price is worth paying if it means they get the guy that is going to lead them to the playoffs or a championship. The question you have to ask is what would you pay to have Manning, Brady, Bortles, Rogers, etc? If Wentz or Goff turns out to be that caliber of player, no price is too high.
Los Angeles Rams fans…your team is currently on the clock.
