Los Angeles Rams Address Offensive Weapons In Fourth Round
With the first overall pick in the 2016 NFL Draft, the Los Angeles Rams drafted quarterback Jared Goff to be the face at the position for years to come. However, in order for Goff to work out, general manager Les Snead and head coach Jeff Fisher would need to bring in some more offensive weapons to help him grow.
They did just that in the fourth round. Holding the 110th and 113th overall picks the Rams looked to add more offensive talent to help one of the worst units in the NFL last year.
With the 110th pick in the 2016 NFL Draft, the Los Angeles Rams select Tyler Higbee, Tight End, Western Kentucky.
The Rams had a desperate need for a tight end after cutting Jared Cook prior to free agency. With Higbee, they get a need as well as good value. He’s had some run ins with the law as he faces a 2nd degree assault charge, but the kid has great potential. According to ProFootballFocus he gained 2.30 yards per route run, which was second in the class, and had just two drops in 2015.
It was crucial to give Goff a big receiving tight end, and the Rams do that here with Higbee. He’s a great athlete, can make plays after the catch, and is a mismatch nightmare for defenses. He needs to work on his blocking, but he that is something he can work on.
With the 117th pick in the 2016 NFL Draft, the Los Angeles Rams select, Pharaoh Cooper, Wide Receiver, South Carolina.
The Rams picked up an extra sixth round pick by trading back with the Chicago Bears to the 117th spot. The trend of taking offense continued as they took a play making wide receiver in Pharaoh Cooper who has a lot of upside. He is explosive excelling at running vertically and he is great in space. The South Carolina receiver was the only true option offensively at receiver for South Carolina, yet managed 66 receptions in the SEC last season.
He isn’t the most physical receiver and is still raw in his route running, but he can develop. Pro FootballFocus compares Cooper to Doug Baldwin.
The Los Angeles Rams are doing exactly what they need to do after drafting a quarterback first overall. They are giving him some weapons. How these weapons perform on the field is yet to be seen, but with the upside of Cooper and Higbee, this is a good start.
