Los Angeles Rams Need To Cut Nick Foles

The Los Angeles Rams have a problem when it comes to the quarterback position. While they hopefully solved one of their problems at the position by drafting a possible solution and franchise quarterback in Jared Goff, that doesn’t take away the fact that they have four quarterbacks and really should only have three headed into training camp.

Given that the other three quarterbacks are Nick Foles, Case Keenum, and Sean Mannion, it’s safe to say, one of those players won’t be on the roster at the beginning of the season. Looking at those three guys, Keenum played decent for the Rams down the stretch last season and Mannion was a third round draft choice just last year, that leaves Foles as the odd man out.

The Rams traded for Foles just last offseason, but to say the least it didnt work out. After a beginning that seemed so bright with wins against the Seahawks and Cardinals, the quarterback was benched by midseason.

It was rumored that the Rams were calling teams about Foles during the draft, however, with he way the draft went, there is no longer a market for the Rams quarterback. In reality there were a handful of teams before the draft that might have even been interested in Foles. Those teams being the Browns, Broncos and Jets.

The Browns signed RGIII and drafted Cody Kessler, the Broncos traded for Mark Sanchez and drafted Paxton Lynch, the Jets have Geno Smith, drafted Christian Hackenberg, and are waiting to sign Ryan Fitzpatrick.

Aside from those teams, who would have some interest in Foles? After the Broncos drafted Lynch, and the Jets drafted a developmental passer in Hackenberg, any hope for the Rams to trade Foles disappeared.

The fact of the matter is, while Foles’ 2013 will forever live in the record books as he put up 27 touchdowns and two interceptions, it has been proven that was a fluke season. The same reasons the Rams want to get rid of Foles are the same reasons that teams dont want to trade for him. Right now he simply isn’t attractable to other teams.

At this point, Keenum is probably more attractable to teams and the Rams value Keenum too much to trade him away. It would not be shocking if he begins the season as the starter.

The Rams could hold on to Foles through camp and hope that a situation were to develop and a spot would open up on another team to make them desperate enough to trade for Foles, but even then better players like Colin Kaepernick and Sam Bradford might be available.

Going into camp, there is no reason for the Rams to keep Foles on the roster. To begin they need to be able to get young guys like Goff and Mannion as many reps as they can get. Even if Goff doesn’t begin as the starting quarterback, he needs to reps. Right now, Foles is the fourth guy on the depth chart and there is no point to go into camp with four quarterbacks, especially when this one would be the highest paid fourth string quarterback in the NFL.

Right now there is no market for Foles. The Rams have moved on as shown by trading up to draft Jared Goff. It’s better for Fisher and the Rams to just cut Foles and move on with Keenum, Mannion, and Goff as the team heads into training camp.
