Honorable Mention: Benny Cunningham vs. Tre Mason

Even after Tre Mason‘s disappointing 2015 campaign in which he averaged just 2.8 yards per carry, he still seemed like a likely candidate to earn the No. 2 spot at running back behind Todd Gurley. After the first weekend of training camp, now it seems unlikely Mason will even earn a roster spot for the upcoming season.

Not only have the Rams been frustrated with Mason’s off-the-field issues over the last few months, but the running back was absent from the first official day of training camp on Saturday. On top of missing camp, Jeff Fisher indicated this weekend how he hasn’t even heard from the running back since the end of last season.

When taking all of this into consideration, why would Los Angeles waste their time with Mason?

The positive side with this situation for the Rams is it provides Benny Cunningham with the opportunity to prove himself as a reliable backup to Todd Gurley. Cunningham has been waiting for the opportunity to shine after recording 647 rushing yards with four touchdowns over his first three seasons and thanks to Mason’s immaturity, 2016 could finally be his year.
