No. 1 pick Jared Goff made his preseason debut with the Los Angeles Rams on Saturday against the Dallas Cowboys, but the rookie still has plenty to learn.

Former California star Jared Goff realizes it’s only a matter of time before he takes over the starting role at quarterback for the Los Angeles Rams–especially when looking at all of the draft picks they surrendered to move up to No. 1 in this year’s draft. For now, Jeff Fisher decided it would be best to go with Case Keenum as the starter for now while letting Goff learn from the sidelines.

After Saturday’s preseason game against the Dallas Cowboys, it seems like Fisher is making the right decision.

Goff’s first preseason action against the Cowboys got off to a rough start on Saturday after the rookie played most of the second quarter and completed just 4 of 9 passes for 38 yards. While the offensive line could have done a better job at protecting their quarterback, Goff still looked uncomfortable for most of the plays and even threw an interception on just his second pass of the game–so there’s clearly plenty of work that still needs to be done with the hopeful franchise quarterback.

There’s no reason for the Rams to hit the panic button since this is Goff’s first NFL action and it’s expected for rookies to struggle on this early. With that being said, it’s not a good sign that Goff only saw action for most of the second quarter and was benched in the second half for Sean Mannion–who threw a touchdown pass on the team’s first drive of the third quarter.

Knowing Fisher, the head coach was probably disappointed with Goff’s performance and figured it would be best to just wait until next weekend so his quarterback could have a fresh start.
