Nelson Spruce had quite the debut for the Los Angeles Rams against the Dallas Cowboys and is quickly becoming a fan favorite to make the team’s roster.

One of the biggest position battles for the Los Angeles Rams heading into training camp was the wide receiver position behind Tavon Austin and Kenny Britt–mainly because it’s such an open competition. After Saturday’s preseason opening win against the Dallas Cowboys, it’s safe to say Nelson Spruce is certainly one player to keep an eye on over the next few weeks of training camp.

Spruce was nothing but phenomenal during his debut with the Rams and quite the unexpected surprise after leading the team with six catches for 51 yards–including a key seven-yard touchdown catch from Sean Mannion in the fourth quarter. Los Angeles signed Spruce back in May after the wideout went undrafted and despite sitting near the bottom of the depth chart prior to Saturday’s game, it looks like the former Colorado star may have a solid shot at making the team’s roster.

The Rams clearly liked the potential they saw in Spruce after the wideout caught 195 passes for 2,251 yards and 16 touchdowns over his final two seasons with the Buffaloes–even if most of those numbers came from his junior season in 2014. While there’s no reason to jump to conclusions after just one game when considering all of the competition at wideout, it’s tough for Los Angles fans not to get excited about Spruce.

There’s still a long way to go in the preseason, but that one game is all it took to make Spruce a fan favorite and now it’s up to him to play with all his heart like he did against Dallas over the next couple of weeks.
