The Los Angeles Rams opened the 2016 season by falling 28-0 to the San Francisco 49ers on the road.

The Los Angeles Rams were hoping to make a statement in Week 1 against the San Francisco 49ers by proving the offense would show improvement after ranking near the bottom of the league in 2015. Unfortunately for the Rams, it looks like the offense is heading towards another disappointing season if their performance against the 49ers is any indication of what to expect.

The word frustration doesn’t even begin to describe the kind of night it was for Los Angeles during their 28-0 loss to San Francisco during Monday Night Football as this team has plenty to work on heading into their Week 2 matchup against the Seattle Seahawks. From failing to score a single point to Aaron Donald‘s frustration resulting in an ejection, this was one of those games where Jeff Fisher is going to want to just throw out the game film and start fresh.

After beating out Jared Goff for the starting job at quarterback, Case Keenum looked awful against the 49ers after completing just 17 of 35 passes for 130 yards to go along with two interceptions. With one of the league’s top defenses from a year ago, Fisher made the decision to start Keenum due to his experience, and his belief that Los Angeles is talented enough to be contenders now.

With the way the Rams looked against the 49ers, it’s safe to say this team still has a lot to work on before they can be thrown into the conversation of being contenders in the NFC. And if that wasn’t frustrating enough, Todd Gurley–last year’s Rookie of the Year–struggled to find holes on offense to finish with only 47 rushing yards.

One of the main reasons why Los Angeles was unable to put up any points in the opener was due to their inability to convert on third downs. Not only did the Rams finish just 3-of-15 on third down conversions, but there was one point in the game where they failed to convert 10-straight times.

The sad thing is, things aren’t going to get any easier next weekend against the Seahawks.

While there’s no reason to hit the panic button just yet, at least this poor performance by the Rams means they can only go up from here. One game does not define an entire season, and when considering all of the hype surrounding this team’s return to Los Angeles, let’s hope this team performs better moving forward to at least give the city something to be excited about.

Otherwise, the first season back in Los Angeles could turn out to be a disaster.
