Case Keenum came up big for the Los Angeles Rams on offense, but failed to shine on the final drive when the team needed him the most.

After failing to throw touchdowns in three of the team’s first five games, many wondered if Case Keenum deserved to be the starting quarterback for the Los Angeles Rams, especially with Jared Goff waiting for the right opportunity to step in as a rookie. With the way the veteran played on Sunday against the Detroit Lions, it’s safe to say the Rams are feeling much better about having Keenum as their starting quarterback when considering it was the defense that let them down the most.

Los Angeles lost for the second-straight week after falling to Detroit 31-28 thanks to a late 34-yard field goal by Matt Prater in the final two minutes to give the Lions their second win in a row. The Rams found themselves in position to tie or take the lead late in the final minute before an unfortunate interception by Keenum sealed the win for the Lions.

Keenum was a nightmare for the Lions’ defense after completing 27 of 32 passes for 321 yards with three touchdown passes. Not only was this just the second time he’s crossed the 300-yard mark in his career, but Keenum found a way record a rushing touchdown of his own in the second quarter to give him four total on the day, but all of this is meaningless when the Rams still come up on the losing end.

No matter how much they tried, the defense of Los Angeles just couldn’t figure out a way to shutdown Matthew Stafford as the Lions quarterback had a field day on offense after completing 23 of 31 passes for 270 yards with four touchdowns. After throwing three touchdowns in Week 5 against the Philadelphia Eagles, Los Angeles knew there was a possibility Stafford would cause all sorts of problems for the defense, and that was exactly the case on Sunday.

What makes this loss even more frustrating is the Rams had no business of losing this game to the Lions when considering the offense seemed to do everything right up until that final drive of the game. Between Keenum’s big game along with Kenny Britt stepping it up in the passing game with seven catches for 136 yards and two touchdowns, this was arguably one of the best performances by Los Angeles on offense all season.

Even though the defense has been dealing with key injuries at numerous positions, it’s hard to defend a unit that allowed Detroit to convert 6 of 11 times on third down. The Rams may have fallen to 3-3 on the season, but this was by far the most frustrating loss yet as the defense was a huge disappointment in this one.
