It appears San Francisco 49ers running back Joe Williams will be playing with an extra chip on his shoulders when facing the Los Angeles Rams in 2017.

Despite some of the names available in the mid rounds, the Los Angeles Rams weren’t really expected to use one of their picks in the 2017 NFL Draft on a running back, especially since the team already has Malcolm Brown and Lance Dunbar backing up Todd Gurley. However, it looks like San Francisco 49ers rookie running back Joe Williams has some negative feelings towards the Rams for not even having the former Utah star on their draft board, which he plans on using as motivation moving forward.

49ers Web Zone recently discussed how Williams looks forward to playing Los Angeles this most, although he mentions his excitement towards facing the Seattle Seahawks as well, but for different reasons. Even though everything would eventually turn out well for Williams after the 49ers selected him in the fourth round, it appears the rookie running back isn’t too happy over the Rams decision to not even considering him as an option in this year’s draft.

From the perspective of Los Angeles, it’s easy to understand why they didn’t want to focus on a running back like Williams when considering the other areas they decided to focus on instead, especially when it came to finding better weapons for Jared Goff in the passing game. Even if the Rams had considered Williams as a possibility, it seems unlikely he would find any time on the football field since the team wouldn’t want to takeaway carries from Brown or Dunbar.

Either way, Williams can play with all of the extra motivation he wants when the time comes to face Los Angeles, but first the rookie needs to prove to San Francisco he was worth the risk in the fourth round. At the moment, Williams currently sits No. 3 on the depth chart for the 49ers at running back behind Carlos Hyde and Tim Hightower, which means the chances of him receiving significant playing time against the Rams already seem slim.
