Are the Los Angeles Rams scrambling on what may happen if quarterback Jared Goff isn’t ready come the regular season?

The Los Angeles Rams will eventually figure it out, but if there is a “kiss of death” endorsement coming later, we may have gotten a preview when Rams Czar Sean McVay said this: “we’re going to let the best players play.”

Cue to Norah Jones as Rams fans from coast to coast curl up into their respective safe spaces and wonder how such bad luck could befell their LA team.

Ok, that may be a bit dramatic. But not much.

Los Angeles finds themselves in that exquisite space in May where “coach speak” will be sliced and diced for the purposes of getting to the bottom of just how well Jared Goff is OR IS NOT performing at OTA’s.

Yes, OTA’s.

That said, looking at a depth chart where Roman Gabriel could make an argument for opening day starter is frightening.

Yet here we are.

When asked about the Rams number one overall pick, McVay would offer this well crafted quote:

"“I think what we’ve tried to preach to our players is we’re going to let the best players play,” McVay said. “We’re trying to win football games and whoever we feel like gives us the best chance is who’s going to play behind center.”"

Spoken like a man who wants to keep his options open.

As I wrote recently, McVay will get a pass if Goff is a bust, and while May 31 is too early to write the obituary on the former Cal quarterback and his NFL aspirations, it’s fair to say he’s the frontrunner in name only.

But I wouldn’t mind seeing him put some distance between he and Sean Mannion.

Mannion may be second on the depth chart, but it’s not a name McVay is looking forward to having to call this season.

Let’s just hope it doesn’t get that far.
