Sean McVay made it clear he would go with the best player available for the Los Angeles Rams at quarterback, whether that ends up being Jared Goff or Sean Mannion.

Over the last few months, there’s been plenty of excitement surrounding Jared Goff entering his second year with the Los Angeles Rams, as the former No. 1 pick looks to build off a disappointing rookie campaign in which he failed to record a single win in seven starts. Obviously, the results could have been much different for Goff with an improved offensive line along with a better receiving corps to work with, but at least it was a good learning curve for the young quarterback.

With that being said, it’s going to be difficult for Goff to come up with reliable excuses moving forward when looking at what Los Angeles has done this offseason to make their hopeful franchise quarterback’s sophomore season much smoother than last year. Not only did the Rams land one of the top free agents in Andrew Whitworth to boost the offensive line, but they also brought in Robert Woods (free agency) and Cooper Kupp (NFL Draft) to provide better options in the passing game.

Give Los Angeles credit for focusing on fixing these areas in need of improvement in the offseason to hopefully bring the best out of Goff, but even new head coach Sean McVay knows nothing is guaranteed when it comes to starting jobs in the NFL. In fact, McVay speaking to the media on Tuesday made it clear the starting job at quarterback for the Rams will go to the players who gives the team their best chance of winning games.

Here’s what McVay had to say about the quarterback situation, courtesy of the team site:

"“I think what we’ve tried to preach to our players is we’re going to let the best players play. We’re trying to win football games and whoever we feel like gives us the best chance is who’s going to play behind center. Right now, we feel very good about what they’ve both done. (QB) Jared (Goff) has done a nice job getting better, but you always want to make sure that you’re playing the guy that you feel like gives you the best ability to win football games, because we owe it to our coaches, to our players and to this organization to do that. I think what we’ve seen is good for those guys, but right now Jared’s the starter and he’s done a nice job commanding that role.”"

Los Angeles fans should keep in mind that reports surfaced earlier in May regarding Sean Mannion in which numerous members within the organization praised the backup’s development process this offseason. In other words, if Goff’s struggles carried over into his sophomore season with the Rams, there are some who strongly believed Mannion would be capable of taking over as the starter at quarterback.

Only time will determine when it comes to seeing if Goff has what it takes to hang on to the starting job, but at least McVay’s recent comments will provide the Rams quarterback with a little extra motivation over the next few months. Otherwise, it will be tough for Goff to avoid the bust label when considering all of the draft picks surrendered by Los Angeles just to land him at No. 1 back in the 2016 NFL Draft that will all of a sudden look like a complete waste.
