30. San Francisco 49ers (30)

Should the San Francisco 49ers be concerned over veteran Brian Hoyer at quarterback? Even if it was only the first game of preseason, the 49ers can’t feel confident over the fact that he only completed 1 of 4 passes for three yards against the Kansas City Chiefs, especially when seeing how well Matt Barkley and C.J. Beathard played under center.

With the second overall pick (before trading down with the Chicago Bears) in the 2017 NFL Draft, there was some speculation over whether San Francisco would use the selection on a quarterback after moving on from Colin Kaepernick in the offseason. Instead, Kyle Shanahan seemed more interested in the short-term solution with Hoyer after seeing how successful he’s been at times over the last couple of years.

For obvious reasons, it’s tough to make a big deal over the first preseason game, but with the 49ers having other quarterbacks like Barkley looking to make a case for the starting job, these next few preseason games could get quite interesting. With all the pressure Shanahan faces in his first year to help San Francisco bounce back from a two-win season, the new head coach will clearly go with the best option at quarterback during the regular season, whether that’s Hoyer or someone else.
