After previously holding out in the preseason, it looks like Aaron Donald and the Los Angeles Rams are discussing a potential long-term deal.

Between recording 28 sacks over his first three seasons despite all of the extra attention from defenders along with leading the NFL in quarterback hits (31) last season, the Los Angeles Rams realized it was only a matter of time before having to open up the checkbook for Aaron Donald. The former Pittsburgh standout has slowly been working his way into becoming one of the league’s top defensive stars ever since he was selected by the Rams in the first round back in 2014, and when looking at the impact he’s still been able to make this season despite missing all of training camp along with preseason, it’s clear Donald is one of a kind.

Just look at what Donald was recently able to accomplish in Week 15 against the Seattle Seahawks in which he took advantage of a horrendous offensive line to record three sacks of his own on Russell Wilson. In fact, the three sacks recorded by Donald helped the defensive superstar tie a career high for a season (11), and with two games remaining for Los Angeles, chances are he’s going to end up setting a new personal best.

Not having Donald present back in training camp was beyond frustrating for the Rams and their fans to see when considering how high the levels of frustration already were after winning just four games all of last year. But after hearing the recent news that Donald’s agents are currently in discussion with the organization about a long-term deal, which most football fans have to assume will make him one of the league’s top paid defensive players, it seems like everything seems to be falling into place for both parties.

In a way, the whole situation with Donald during training camp was a difficult one to deal with when considering his high level of production outmatched the amount of money he would be making over the next two seasons. However, the good news is the Rams are making sure they address this situation right now instead of waiting until the offseason since the last thing the team can afford to see happen is another holdout like earlier in the year.

As good as the offense has been this season thanks to players like Jared Goff and Todd Gurley enjoying the benefits of playing in Sean McVay‘s system, Los Angeles wouldn’t be in this current situation at 10-4 if it wasn’t for Donald’s presence on the defensive side of the football. And assuming the Rams do end up punching their ticket to the postseason at some point over these next two weeks, Donald is most likely going to play a major role in this team making a deep run come January while continuing to prove he’s worth every penny of whatever future deal he receives.
