With Todd Gurley resting for the Los Angeles Rams in Week 17, the running back ended up falling behind Kareem Hunt in total rushing yards.

All things considered, the decision for Sean McVay to rest Todd Gurley in Week 17 was the right decision since the Los Angeles Rams head coach needs to be focused on the big picture, which is obviously the playoffs getting underway next weekend. Despite the No. 3 seed technically still being up for grabs along with the chance to continue building his case for MVP, it would have been absolutely devastating to see some sort of injury happen to Gurley during the regular-season finale against the San Francisco 49ers, which is why it was better for McVay to play it safe rather than be sorry.

After failing to record a single 100-yard rushing game a year ago, the turnaround from Gurley this season has been absolutely for phenomenal for Los Angeles, as the former Georgia star will end the 2017 season with 2,093 yards from the line of scrimmage to go along with 19 total touchdowns. And if Gurley continues to play at this pace in the postseason, the Rams are going to be the last team anyone wants to play in January, especially when looking at all of the other dangerous weapons, including Jared Goff, on the offense.

With that being said, there was still a chance that Gurley would end up taking home the rushing title this season (1,305 rushing yards heading into Week 17) since there was a good chance that some of his competition would end up resting in the regular-season finale. Unfortunately, Rams fans found out early on that Gurley would end up missing out on the title thanks to another running back having a season to remember in Kareem Hunt of the Kansas City Chiefs.

Next: Will Goff come through in postseason?

As disappointing as this may seem for Los Angeles fans, the important thing here is to keep an eye on the bigger picture, and keep in mind that Gurley is still in great shape to take home MVP honors when taking everything from this season into consideration. Plus, if the extra rest in Week 17 results in Gurley having a monster game during Wild Card weekend, missing out on the rushing title would be 100 percent worth it since the playoffs are the most important factor.
