Los Angeles Rams offensive coordinator Matt LaFleur will interview with the Tennessee Titans this week for their head coaching position.

In just one year, Sean McVay was able to help the Los Angeles Rams make NFL history by going from worst to first in scoring offense after averaging just 14 points per game in 2016 to making the major leap of averaging 29.9 points per game this season. But as much credit as McVay deserves, Rams fans know that Matt LaFleur was just as important in helping the offense pull off their amazing turnaround.

Before joining McVay’s staff in Los Angeles, LaFleur spent the previous two seasons as the quarterbacks coach for the Atlanta Falcons, and played a big role along with Kyle Shanahan in helping Matt Ryan put together his MVP campaign last season. With one of McVay’s top priorities during his first year as head coach being to help Jared Goff reach a whole new level at quarterback, there was plenty of excitement to see what LaFleur would accomplish in 2017 as offensive coordinator for the Rams, and the results clearly show he lived up to the hype.

Of course, when coaches put together successful seasons like LaFleur did in Los Angeles, it catches the eyes of other NFL teams in need of a new head coach, such as the Tennessee Titans. And with the Titans announcing on Monday that Mike Mularkey wouldn’t return for the 2018 season, despite reaching the Divisional Round of the playoffs, it appears LaFleur is one of the candidates gaining interest from the organization.

Even if the chances of this happening seem like a long shot at the moment, the Rams have to at least feel slightly concerned over the possibility of losing LaFleur since if offered the position as head coach, joining a playoff caliber team like the Titans would be a no brainer. Keep in mind that Los Angeles already recently promoted Zac Taylor to quarterbacks coach after Greg Olson took the offensive coordinator job with the Oakland Raiders, so it will be interesting to see how this interview with LaFleur and the Titans plays out in case another move needs to be made.

Either way, no matter what happens with this situation involving LaFleur, the good news is McVay will still have the Rams in good shape to make sure their serious contenders once again in 2018. Just like the situation with Olson, McVay will figure out a solution at offensive coordinator if needed, so Los Angeles fans should keep an eye on this whole situation with LaFleur over the next few days.
