3. Mahomes still has to prove himself
First off, let the record show that Patrick Mahomes II has a ton of potential to be one of the league’s next best quarterbacks, and there’s a reason why the Chiefs were willing to throw him into the mix earlier than expected in 2018 by parting ways with Alex Smith. With that being said, Mahomes still has to prove he is capable of being an effective NFL starter, and until that happens, the pressure will be on the former Texas Tech star.
The good news for Mahomes is Kansas City has done an amazing job with providing their quarterback with the necessary weapons to succeed on offense, including the recent addition of Watkins. Even more Watkins came into the picture, Mahomes was fortunate enough to have dangerous weapons in Kareem Hunt and Travis Kelce to work with, which most quarterbacks would do anything to be part of.
With Albert Wilson hitting free agency (reportedly agreed to join the Miami Dolphins), the Chiefs were one of numerous teams expected to make a big run at a wide receiver in this year’s free agency class. Watkins may seem great, but it’s up to Mahomes to establish the necessary chemistry with his new wideout to make this deal seem worth it.
