The Rams are saying all the right things, just not doing them with Aaron Donald

The Los Angeles Rams seem determined to wait until the eleventh hour with Aaron Donald.

Los Angeles Rams head coach Sean McVay keeps hitting all the talking points like a seasoned veteran of the DC Beltway.

“I don’t think I’d ever use the word crisis… We’re proactive to finding a solution,” McVay told reporters, per Los Angeles Times sports writer Gary Klein.

OK.

For the record, I’ve said the Rams don’t need to be in any rush to ink the reigning Defensive Player of the Year. In fact, I’ve said they have time and should wait to see how this wild offseason of “win now” pans out.

All that said, it’s hard not read what Les Snead and McVay offer on the matter, and NOT wonder if they are at that place where the light has yet to enter the tunnel. With the fan base absolutely glowing after a tour de force kind of free agency period, it’s hard not to wonder about such things like contracts and all. But credit the second year head coach for offering the correct speak when addressing the matter:

"“We feel good about the dialogue that has existed. We totally understand some of the other things that are going on with regards to wanting to get that deal, and with respect to Aaron, we feel really good about that dialogue. And this is a voluntary offseason program with where we’re at. You know he’s a guy who’s going to work hard on his off-time, and that’s kind of where we’re at. So we feel good with everything that’s going on with that.”"

It is worth reminding fans that before long, the bill is going to come due on Aaron Donald. And I’ll go so far as to say that Camp Snead and McVay are perhaps holding the Rams signature star as the consolation prize should the go-for-broke approach to winning a Super Bowl blows up without said championship.

A good plan?
Nope.

At some point, the good faith extended when Donald showed up last preseason has likely ended, meaning the Los Angeles tackle and the Rams brain-trust aren’t necessarily at square one, but they probably are not close to getting a deal done either.

If you’re a betting person, wager on LA getting this taken care of, probably later rather than sooner. Just don’t count on it being a warm and fuzzy process.

For as much as the Rams have gotten right since McVay came aboard, this one they’ve let drag on far to long.
