For fans who may be wondering, running back John Kelly may end up being the best player the Los Angeles Rams drafted in the 2018 NFL Draft.
Don’t look now, but the Los Angeles Rams may have made their best selection in the 2018 NFL Draft when they picked running back John Kelly from Tennessee.
Reasons why?
It’s not complicated.
Fans who dispute such an idea will point to current running back and reigning Offensive Player of the Year Todd Gurley and say the Rams took a player they don’t need, but based on at least one key trend, his selection alone may benefit Los Angeles the most.
Gurley, who is entering year four of his rookie deal, has yet to put two consecutive season together that are productive for the team. That’s not to say this season won’t be, but it’s not an absolute lock he will.
History does have a way of repeating itself.
But let’s say, for the sake of argument, that he bucks that trend.
Rams quarterback Jared Goff relied heavily on Gurley in 2017, and is likely to in 2018. If, and I say IF Gurley were to struggle for any reason, Kelly is a back who could likely fit in without LA missing a beat. He’s every bit the every down back the Rams would and could use, as well as being an able pass catcher out of the backfield.
That could be a key element for head coach Sean McVay in a year where all systems are go for an LA Super Bowl run.
It’s also a good deal for Goff.
Next: Hits and misses from the Rams 2018 offseason
Allen is about as good of a plug-and-play type of player as a team could hope for, and if LA ends up on that championship trajectory, his selection could be a key reason why.
The Rams will need a solid type of player who can mirror the 2017 OPOY.
Kelly will and can be that guy.
