Former Los Angeles Rams wide receiver Sammy Watkins recently made some interesting comments about wanting to work with a younger quarterback.

Heading into the 2018 offseason, the Los Angeles Rams faced a difficult decision when it came to using the franchise tag since both Lamarcus Joyner and Sammy Watkins seemed worthy of the consideration.

With that being said, there’s no question that the Rams made the wise choice by using the tag on Joyner over Watkins since it would have been a lot hard to replace him on defense.

Not to mention, when seeing the hefty amount of money the Kansas City Chiefs were willing to pay Watkins to come on board in free agency, it was a relief to see Los Angeles avoid that ridiculous price.

As bad as it sounds, Watkins is the kind of receiver that is easier to replace, and when seeing how the Rams would eventually acquire another speedster in Brandin Cooks down the road, this whole situation seemed to work out for the best. However, it looks like Watkins has worked his way back into the conversation of some Los Angeles fans for questionable comments about working with a younger quarterback.

The Rams Wire recently discussed how Watkins told USA Today that one of the reasons why he decided to sign with the Chiefs this offseason was for an opportunity to grow with a young quarterback in Patrick Mahomes II. Along with this comment, Watkins also stated how Kansas City had a young team with a good head coach in Andy Reid.

After letting these comments to sink in, it’s easy to understand why there are Rams fans confused by what Watkins said since this situation is literally what he had going in Los Angeles.

While Jared Goff is entering his third NFL season, and is coming off a Pro Bowl year, Sean McVay continues to receive heavy praise for how quickly he’s made this Los Angeles team a legitimate Super Bowl contender since coming on board prior to the 2017 season.

Obviously, Watkins had every right to want to join a team like the Chiefs this offseason after a short stint with the Rams, but his comments over wanting to grow with a young quarterback like Mahomes along with the chance to play under Reid doesn’t really make sense.

The fact that Watkins had all of this as a member of Los Angeles shows a big factor in his decision to leave was clearly about the money, and there’s no point in trying to hide it. Instead of making claims that were already in play when he was part of the Rams, Watkins should choose his words more wisely next time to avoid being the topic of discussion in the wrong way.
