Los Angeles Rams: 30 greatest players in franchise history
By Dan Parzych
Coaching-wise, Nolan Cromwell bounced around to numerous teams once his play days in the NFL came to an end after the 1987 season, whether it was as a wide receivers coach or as an offensive coordinator.
However, when it came to playing in the NFL, the Rams were the only team Cromwell ever played for. He made quite the impact as a defensive back during his 11 years with the organization.
Los Angeles selected the defender in the second round of the 1977 NFL Draft. Even though he failed to start a single game over his first two seasons in the NFL, Cromwell did put together a breakout year in 1979.
During that season, Cromwell would end up starting all 16 games for the Rams, and would finish the year with five interceptions to go along with three fumble recoveries.
Even more exciting, Cromwell managed to reach the Pro Bowl four years in a row from 1980-83. He took home NFC Defensive Player of the Year honors during the 1980 NFL season.
Cromwell is another one of those players that played a key role in helping Los Angeles earn four straight trips to the playoffs from 1983-86. Seeing him finish his career with 37 interceptions shows just how valuable of a player he truly was.
Not to mention, the Rams happened to be one of the teams Cromwell happened to bounce around to as an assistant (twice) after retirement. This only adds to the notion that he will always have a special place in the hearts of the Rams and their fans.
